title: "Trolls vs. Users: The Limited Importance of Online Communities"

A common lament in the Dash community is that, compared to some other cryptocurrency communities, it appears to be underrepresented in many online outlets such as Reddit and the Bitcointalk forums. For example, recently there was what appeared to be a coordinated effort in the /r/cryptocurrency subreddit to attack Dash, which garnered many updates and anti-Dash comments. The number of anti-Dash folks (mostly Monero supporters) appeared to far outnumber the Dash supporters. Further, Twitter polls asking for a vote on which cryptocurrency to support next usually show Dash significantly outvoted by other cryptos.
One might think from that evidence that Dash is an obscure, weakly-supported cryptocurrency. Yet for years it has consistently been in the Top 10 in market capitalization, and currently has a market cap over $2 billion. Further, hundreds of merchants currently accept Dash, far outnumbering most other cryptocurrencies.
So what accounts for the discrepancy? Why is it that Dash’s online community support is not proportional to its actual real-world support? I would argue there are three reasons: (1) the personality of the Dash Core team; (2) the personality of the typical Dash supporter; and (3) the existence of a functional governance system.
Professionalism
The origins of cryptocurrency are seeped in strong ideological beliefs, such as the importance of decentralization and the freedom of the individual. In general, these ideology beliefs are a good thing, but there is a tension between this ethos and real-world practical applications. Regular users don’t care about the ideology behind a project; they just want something to make their lives easier. Yet many cryptocurrency projects are most interested in pushing their ideology, even when it means alienating large numbers of potential users. For example, the public face of Monero, Riccardo Spagni, loves to troll other projects, and rarely resists the temptation to attack and ridicule those projects via social media outlets. Further, the CEO and the CTO of Blockstream, Adam Back and Greg Maxwell, are often found deep in Reddit debates, arguing the smallest points with a tenacity of a pit bull on a steak. These actions trickle down to followers of each project. It encourages Monero or Bitcoin fans to spend hours scouring the web trying to find an opponent to browbeat into submission, just like the leaders of their project do.
The members of the Dash Core team, on the other hand, are remarkably quiet in online forums. Other than answering questions and informing the public of their progress, they rarely—if ever—get involved in online debates. And they never attack other projects. Their primary concern is creating a product that will be useful for millions of people. This professionalism carries forward into the Dash community as well. Instead of spending hours each day trying to find online arguments to win, most Dash supporters follow the lead of the Core team and simply try to advance the project in their own sphere of influence.
More Mature Base
Although no formal studies exist, it is widely assumed that Dash supporters are older and more experienced in business than supporters of other cryptocurrency projects. For example, I’m “old” by crypto standards, being in my late 40’s, and I’ve been involved with technology companies for more than 20 years. Supporters like me see Dash less as a means to overthrow the current world order than a means to solve real-world financial problems. So spending time debating the minute details of each crypto’s technical setup and its supposed commitment to various ideologies seems like a waste of valuable time. We see the endless arguments on Reddit and in various forums as an exercise in futility, and typically just ignore all the noise.
This doesn’t mean attacks against Dash are completely ignored. Some members of the community admirably step up and defend Dash and its technology when the trolls come out. Even then, such activity is a necessary evil, not a core (no pun intended) part of the project.
Governance Gives a Voice
The final, and possibly most important, reason the Dash community is quieter online than some other crypto communities is because Dash supporters have a real-world outlet for impacting the direction of their project. We’ve seen millions of ASCII’s spilt arguing over the maximum size of a Bitcoin block. This debate is so fierce and intractable because there is no good mechanism to resolve it. Conversely, in the Dash community, the same debate was resolved in hours, because the Masternodes, the “managers” of the Dash project, were able to vote on the issue in a definitive way.
Because of the existence of a real governance mechanism, trolls and online brigading has little impact on the direction of the Dash project. It might be worthwhile to spend resources arguing on Reddit when Reddit is the main means to influence a crypto’s small Core team. But when a cryptocurrency project is managed by a large, diverse group of investors, like Dash is, such an effort is far less likely to succeed. Online trolls can splutter and vent, but even they know they have no real impact on decision-making in Dash.
Moving Forward
It’s easy to think that small online communities like Reddit or various forums constitute the whole world of cryptocurrency. Perhaps in the early days of Bitcoin this was even true. But cryptocurrency has moved beyond those isolated, homogenous groups, and now extends to people who have no interest in arguing the equivalent of how many angels can fit on the head of a pin. Instead, they want real-world solutions to real-world problems, and this is where the Dash community invests its time and energy. Though it may seem quieter than other communities, that is because the passion behind the project is directed towards more productive endeavors than trolling forums and engaging in pointless arguments.

Alt Thirty Six, a digital payments platform, has announced its support for Dash as a choice of payments for cannabis customers, merchants, and vendors.
Alt Thirty Six, a digital payments platform, has announced its support for Dash as a choice of payments for customers, merchants, vendors and up-and-coming retailers. The announcement came today via press release. The company based out of Phoenix, Arizona, will integrate digital currency into its new platform, 36. Accepting Dash will lower costs associated with handling cash and debit/credit charges for the cannabis industry.
Customers in selected retail industries, like the regulated cannabis industry will incur no costs paying with Dash at Point of Sale terminals or shopping online. Traditional alternatives such as cash are free to accept but come with the burden of transporting and risk of holding. Retailers currently have to pay extra to process and settle card payments. Card related fees incurred by merchants totaled $80 billion in the US alone in 2016.
Ken Ramirez, CEO of Alt Thirty Six said:
"Through this integration, we are focused on continuous research in payments, blockchain, and digital currency The Alt Thirty Six / Dash payment platform eliminates the need for cash-related activities for businesses by using blockchain technology and Dash currency to facilitate the transfer of funds between merchants, suppliers, vendors, and customers."
Dash's Instant-send feature appeals to businesses which have seen more of them adopt it as a payment method. Dash's development community is also responsive to value-added components that fuel acceptance in both B2C and B2B distribution and supply chains.
This partnership with Alt thirty was first proposed in September on a dash forum. CannTrade, a pivotal company in the cannabis B2B marketplace and distribution chain, yearned for 3rd party service tools to empower its business and grow sales. The California based company signed a 36 month exclusive deal with Dash Core team to list Dash on the company's platform solely.
According to the proposal:
"CannTrade, California's premier cannabis specific B2B marketplace & CRM has partnered with Alt Thirty Six to deliver the first truly comprehensive and expedient banking & digital payment solution to the cannabis industry."
Today's announcement was a final step. As a digital payments enabler, Alt Thirty Six will service the integration.
CEO of Dash Core Group Ryan Taylor said
"We believe Alt Thirty Six will constitute a great channel as we expand into new retail verticals. These are all low-margin businesses that could benefit tremendously from lower transaction costs and the ability to reach new customers."
The legal marijuana industry is one of the victims of legacy financial regulations that stands to benefit from cryptocurrencies. Industry projections for retail cannabis sales are $20 billion and $50 billion for the years 2021 and 2026 respectively, with wholesale numbers making up roughly 60% of retail sales.
Consensus points to the lack of banking and digital payments facilities as the largest hurdles in achieving growth. Alt Thirty Six, together with Dash are nibbling at this problem across the country.
On the deal with CannTrade, CEO Ramirez of Alt Thirty Six said
"our close partnership with CannTrade, California's premier cannabis specific B2B marketplace & CRM, will deliver the first truly comprehensive and expedient banking and digital payment solution for the fastest growing industry in the world."

Payment solutions provider Alt Thirty Six has officially announced its exclusive integration of Dash into its retail platform.
A digital payments provider, Alt Thirty Six aims to displace traditional payment systems by leveraging blockchain technology to avoid the limitations of using typical processors and banks, allowing the system to become feasible for new markets. Dash Core’s CEO Ryan Taylor sees the upcoming integration as valuable to increasing Dash’s attractiveness for retail payments:
“Alt Thirty Six is a tremendous asset for the Dash network, because they act as an extension of the network itself – building valuable packages of easy-to-use merchant and consumer services. They are also practical ‘problem-solvers’ that truly understand the legacy payment system’s pain points for specific retail segments. The platform they are building is adaptable to a wide range of business applications, and we believe Alt Thirty Six will constitute a great channel as we expand into new retail verticals. These are all low-margin businesses that could benefit tremendously from lower transaction costs and the ability to reach new customers.”
A key to moving Dash towards mass adoption, starting with the legal cannabis industry
The integration into Alt Thirty Six for Dash, which initially will be an exclusive partner, will uniquely position Dash as the cryptocurrency industry leader for mass adoption, according to CEO Ken Ramirez:
“Through this integration, we are focused on continuous research in payments, blockchain, and digital currency to help enhance the functionality, adoption, and simplicity of accepting digital currency. The Alt Thirty Six / Dash payment platform eliminates the need for cash-related activities for businesses by using blockchain technology and Dash currency to facilitate the transfer of funds between merchants, suppliers, vendors, and customers. Through our collaboration with Dash and many of the most innovative companies in the payments, blockchain, and digital currency sector, we are able to work towards the worldwide adoption of the Dash currency. This worldwide adoption will in turn create faster, more secure, and reduced costs around the way businesses operate.”
Ramirez sees the partnership opening up several doors to Dash, including the legal cannabis industry, which in the United States is historically underserved by traditional payment processing systems:
“We have several integrated partnerships already, but one of the most exciting is our close partnership with CannTrade, California’s premier cannabis specific B2B marketplace & CRM, which will deliver the first truly comprehensive and expedient banking and digital payment solution for the fastest growing industry in the world. Through this partnership we will improve the chances of capturing dispensaries and expanding target users beyond dispensaries and patients to now include genetics companies, cultivators, manufacturers, edible companies, brands, and distribution companies. Being able to offer the 36 + Dash platform as a solution, not only to dispensaries but to the entire cannabis business community simultaneously, is a game changer.”
An integration a long time in the making
The integration with Alt Thirty Six has been an ambitious project long in the making. This spring, the company initially approached the Dash network with a proposal for funding, which received a full-throated endorsement from the Core team. A temporary snag hit when a recent proposal’s multisignature address was rejected by the treasury and not paid out, however Core offered to step in and provide the funds while the proposal was resubmitted successfully.

Digital currency could quite possibly be transformative, providing a paradigm shift in the world’s interactions with money and finance. As Jihan Wu, CEO of Bitmain, recently blogged:
“[Bitcoin] essentially rolls gold, cash, and our credit card system into one. It takes the strengths of each and leaves the weaknesses behind. It has the limited supply quality of gold, but can be used to purchase everyday items. It has the speed of a credit card, but respects and protects your privacy. Transactions are settled instantly like cash, but are recorded on a public ledger.”
Accessibility
Bitcoin and other digital currencies are seriously lacking in one vital area: accessibility. It’s prohibitively difficult for new users to obtain cryptocurrency. An individual who wants to obtain a small amount of Bitcoin would probably find even the easiest route to be rather challenging.
Setting up a Coinbase account would be relatively simple in itself, but then the person must link either a credit card or bank account. Depending on several factors, the purchase may be instant or may require several days for an ACH transaction to be processed. Our new user now owns some shiny new Bitcoin...and probably has no clue what to do next.
Buying larger amounts of Bitcoin is even more difficult, requiring users to go through an extensive process to comply with “Know Your Customer” (KYC) and “Anti-Money Laundering” (AML) laws. This involves submitting numerous personal documents such as driver's licenses and utility bills, then filling out a long questionnaire and awaiting approval. Such users must then figure out what wallet they want to store their currency in, and wrestle with issues such as two-factor authentication and the like.
For users wanting to purchase altcoins (outside of Ethereum and Litecoin), they must do all of the above, then transfer their Bitcoin to another exchange. There they will likely repeat the same KYC/AML process, and only then will they be allowed to trade their Bitcoin for their favorite altcoin.
Selling one’s digital currency for fiat is even more difficult, as doing so nearly always requires AML/KYC verification and additional hoops to jump through. Very few retailers accept even Bitcoin, much less less-known altcoins, so using one’s digital currency to directly purchase product is prohibitively difficult.
Bitcoin ATMs
Over the past couple of years, several solutions to this vexing difficulty have been attempted. The first such attempt was the creation of the Bitcoin ATM. This machine is similar to the bank ATM that we are all familiar with. A user inserts some cash and receives a printed paper wallet which holds their new Bitcoin purchase.
Bitcoin ATMs are expensive, however, and are only suitable for areas with high levels of foot traffic, a sophisticated tech-savvy user base, and reliable Internet access. In some jurisdictions, AML/KYC questionnaires are still required, and many ATMs are merely one-way, as they lack the ability to convert Bitcoin to cash. Thus it remains even more difficult to get fiat money out of cryptocurrency than into it.
Debit cards
Recently another solution has emerged: the Bitcoin debit card. Users deposit Bitcoin in the debit card provider’s web wallet, and they receive an ordinary looking Visa card. When the swipe the card at a retailer’s point of sale, the appropriate amount of Bitcoin in their wallet is immediately sold, converted to cash, and then the cash is sent to the retailer as payment. This all happens in seconds, allowing the transaction to be completed as quickly and seamlessly as an ordinary debit card transaction.
Attempts to integrate Dash
While many digital currencies focus on more arcane areas such as smart contracts, tokenization, or the like, the digital currency Dash has always focused on payments. The name Dash is itself a portmanteau of the words “digital cash.” Founded by Evan Duffield in 2014, Dash aims to promote faster transactions with its InstantSend technology. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, that can take an hour or more to fully confirm, Dash’s InstantSend transactions are fully confirmed and irreversible in just four seconds.
Such speed would make Dash highly useful in physical stores, as there is no need to wait minutes or hours before a transaction clears. However, as with all digital currencies, direct acceptance of Dash at retailers has lagged behind. Since Dash is a payments-oriented digital currency, Dash debit cards seemed like a logical next step.
Bitcoin pioneer and early investor Charlie Shrem came to the Dash community and asked for funding from Dash’s treasury system to fund development of a Dash-branded debit card in March 2017. He received funding directly from the network and began work on the project, but has not yet released the card.
Shortly after Shrem made his proposal and received funding, Dr. Julian Hosp of TenX requested funding to integrate Dash into their Bitcoin-only debit card. His proposal was approved by the Dash network and was funded directly by the Blockchain. That integration was completed in late-April.
Bitcoin debit card integration
At September’s Dash Conference 2017, the Dash team announced an integration with a Bitcoin debit card provider that will allow Dash to be used at any retailer that accepts Visa, both in-store and online. This effectively allows Dash to be spent at over 40 million merchants worldwide. Also, owners of Dash will be able to withdraw their funds, in cash, at any ATM in 210 countries around the world.
More to be done
More work still needs to be done in order for digital currency to truly reach the masses, but cryptocurrency debit cards are a crucial early step. At the same time, a number of industry leaders are working with the Blockchain Caucus in Congress to cut through the red tape and standardize regulation across the US.
Dash and other cryptocurrencies continue to work on making themselves more accessible to ordinary people. At present, Dash’s development team is working on an update to their software called Dash Evolution. The goal of Evolution is to make using Dash so easy “even your grandmother can figure it out.”
Dash’s previously mentioned treasury system uses a portion of the block rewards to fund development of the project and its ecosystem, making it the first self-funded digital currency. Each month, 6,650 DASH are available to fund Dash’s development team and other projects approved by the Dash community. At current prices, that equates to an annual development budget in excess of $23 mln.

Dash is a governance coin previously known as DarkCoin. Its followers include Max Keiser and are so hardcore that many dismiss Dash as a pyramid scheme. But did anyone actually try using Dash? Andreas finds out.
Today I’m reviewing Dash, a governance/privacy focused coin. Dash forked off from Bitcoin with the name DarkCoin and later re-branded to Dash.
TL;DR: Dash is easy to use and has exciting governance/privacy features.
The Dash (DarkCoin) project launched January 2014 and was mostly ignored until the Bitcoin civil war made investors look to governance coins.
The DASH token has a market cap of $2.2 billion (1 DASH = $300). It processes around 5,000 transactions per day.
I usually write these reviews on the weekend. This one is different. The goals are many and time consuming. It took weeks to complete the review. Enjoy!

title: "While Bitcoin Argues, Dash Scales"
original-author: Christine Masters

While the Bitcoin wars are raging and the price is sky-high, Dash looks into the future by learning from the mistakes of others. Becoming mainstream and used worldwide is still the mission for Dash.
While Bitcoin might become so overpriced and precious that it would have to be kept in a vault, Dash still moves in to put digital cash in anyone's pocket for everyday use. While the Bitcoin pre-split battles are raging, Dash is focusing on the future.
Craig Wright, the chief scientist of nChain, sees Dash as competing with Bitcoin Cash on providing a fast enough network for everyday transactions. Currently, he sees Bitcoin Cash winning. And the Bitcoin Cash community is making sincere efforts to popularize the coin and make it easier for businesses to accept and carry.
But Evan Duffield, founder of Dash, believes he has better answers by scaling sooner. Duffield wrote in a Medium blog:
"Because companies are interested in Dash now, we realize that we must begin scaling immediately. When the first version of Dash Evolution is released next year, we anticipate even greater interest and consequently must ensure that our network’s capacity increases rapidly. In order to fulfill our goals of scalability, Dash will begin supporting 2MB blocks beginning in Q4 of this year."
Bitcoin Cash relies on larger block size to speed up transactions. But Dash has a two-tier system that allows un-mined and unverified transactions to still be trusted. And Dash has been around longer, and has added more than 400 businesses to its roster. In addition, Dash will soon be available through the Wirex debit cards, allowing even more spending flexibility.
Recently, Dash has added to a small, but useful service, making a link from SEPA transactions into the world of cryptocurrencies Piixpay is available for European customers and shows that indeed, Dash is competing to a degree with Bitcoin Cash.
The service allows users to fund their account through SEPA transactions and send Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and Dash to friends or family.
The only problem is, users would still have to know what a wallet address is and how to use it. Dash still has the advantage of being available through BitPanda, one of the most widely used European services. Currently, the DASH token has stabilized around $300, off the recent peak around $350.

title: "Dash for Dope – Digital Payments Platform Alt Thirty Six Selects Dash As Payment Method of Choice for New Retail Sectors"
original-author: Richard Kastelein
original-link: http://www.the-blockchain.com/2017/10/13/dash-for-dope-digital-payments-platfo
---
Alt Thirty Six, a rising digital payments platform, has announced it will integrate the top digital currency for payments, Dash, as a method of transaction between consumers, merchants, suppliers and vendors in new retail sectors.
Arizona-based Alt Thirty Six will provide a new technology, the 36 platform, that allows industries to accept Dash as a faster and less expensive form of payment, rather than absorb significant cash handling or credit/debit card fees.
For consumers, costs of transacting in Dash at the Point of Sale and online will be at no cost, similar to their traditional payment options.
Merchants, vendors, and suppliers operating in Dash will benefit from dramatically reduced cash-handling costs and eliminate all card brand fees that amounted to $80 billion from US merchants in 2016.
CEO of Alt Thirty Six Ken Ramirez said:
Dash rapidly moved to the top of the list for businesses accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment, primarily due to its InstantSend feature, the currency’s stability, year over year growth, and global application.
Many other digital currencies fail to provide the necessary value-added components to accept and operate efficiently in digital currency, focusing strictly on business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions, but neglecting business-to-business (B2B) distribution and the supply chain ecosystem.
CEO of Dash Core Group Ryan Taylor said:
“Alt Thirty Six is a tremendous asset for the Dash network, because they act as an extension of the network itself – building valuable packages of easy-to-use merchant and consumer services. They are also practical ‘problem-solvers’ that truly understand the legacy payment system’s pain points for specific retail segments. The platform they are building is adaptable to a wide range of business applications, and we believe Alt Thirty Six will constitute a great channel as we expand into new retail verticals. These are all low-margin businesses that could benefit tremendously from lower transaction costs and the ability to reach new customers.”
Alt Thirty Six will first tackle the cannabis industry, where many legally compliant dispensaries across the country will integrate the payments platform directly, or white label it.
Being able to offer the 36 + Dash platform as a solution, not only to dispensaries but to the entire cannabis business community simultaneously, is a game changer,” Ramirez said.
